In my nearly 10 years working as a producer, I’ve seen different clients make the same several gaffes many times. Despite my best efforts, lots of people fall into these common pitfalls. Below, what you can learn from their mistakes.
Not Having a Clear Vision in the Beginning Before you shoot a single frame of video, you’ll want a finalized script and at least a general storyboard to make sure you capture all of the shots you’ll need to make that script work on your shoot day(s). Trying to come up with a concept after your shoot is working backwards; you run the risk of thinking “I wish we’d shot that differently” every time you watch your video.
DIY Video You wouldn’t try to remove your own appendix, right? Then you should never attempt to use your iPhone, webcam or any other consumer device to create a video for your business. A professional video crew can show you in the best light—literally. A well-written script, high resolution video and yes, flattering lighting make a world of difference. After all, an unprofessional video can drive potential customers away just as easily as a dazzling one can pull them in. You don’t need to be a Fortune 500 company to hire a professional crew. There are countless boutique video firms who specialize in servicing small to medium sized businesses—and their budgets.
Too Many Cooks Toward the end of your production, you’ll likely receive a “rough cut” of your video for your review. This is your chance to give your producer feedback on any items you want changed. You might ask a colleague or friend to watch it with you for a second opinion. Then you might ask a second friend what they think. And a third… Inevitably, the more people you ask, the more differing opinions you’ll get. You may begin to second guess yourself and your initial vision becomes diluted. Have faith in the direction you decided on in the planning process! Remember, no one knows your business better than you do.
You don’t have to be the one making the mistakes to learn from them. By taking my advice, your production will bypass the blunders and sail to success.
