Fast Friends: Using Video to Build Connections Between You and Prospective Clients

"People do business with people they know, like and trust."

You've heard this countless times and know it's simply true. That's why so many people spend so much time at networking events, isn't it?  I'm a firm believer in this mantra, but I don't think business networking is the only way to build these connections.  Of course, you can do it with video.

Profiling yourself or your team with a video on your "About Us" website page enables potential clients get to know you in a personal way.  Even though the video should be focused on the business, just seeing the faces and hearing the voices of you and your employees instantly creates an emotional connection, and many business decisions are made emotionally, not logically.

Depending on your industry, the tone of the video can be lighthearted and humorous, somber but heartwarming, or it could be fast paced and edgy.  Just as long as it's not dry, your video will immediately establish that emotional connection.

Whether you realize it or not, you've undoubtedly seen this tactic countless times.  A very current example is the new Dominos pizza ad featuring "Chicken Chef" Tate Dillow. Personally, I don't eat chicken, but I like this campaign anyway because it's funny and sweet.  I'm rooting for Tate! Keep reading for the link to this video.

Another likely place you've seen this technique is in promotional spots for television news.  TV news is like any other industry-- they compete for customers ("viewers") but at the end of the day, the product is virtually the same. While these stations can't control the events of the day or the weather, they can control the people who deliver it.  As a way to differentiate themselves, TV stations often promote their on air talent in an effort to show off their personalities-- something they can't do during a newscast.  When a viewer feels connected, they're loyal customers.

Your initial reaction to profiling and promoting yourself in this way might be "no way!" but you're doing yourself a disservice to dismiss the idea.  In a former life, I was a promotion producer at many local television news stations.  We employed this technique often and believe it or not, many of the newscasters hated shooting these spots!  They considered themselves journalists and wanted to keep the focus on serious news.  But you know what?  It works.

So go ahead and point that camera at yourself.  Don't be shy, let your personality shine through and make some fast friends and lifelong customers!
